Dogs and divorce

Following our recent publication about pets and divorce, we have noticed several reports in the press detailing how this very emotive subject is dealt with around the world.

In one case in Vincenza, Northern Italy, it seems that the ‘canine members of the family’ could end up being exactly that, being recognised as ‘important objects of affection’ and not just property, as is the approach taken in the UK.

A request has been made to the court for the dogs (2 Labradors) to remain with the wife and daughter and for the husband to contribute 75 euros each month towards their care.  In return the husband will get to spend time with them.  Italian lawyer, Paola Mari has reported:

‘It’s about recognising pets as important objects which need to be taken care of even in the case of separation.”

We await the judgement with interest.  In some earlier cases involving dogs and divorce, judges in Italy have ruled on giving owners shared custody, so we look forward to hearing what happens in this case.
