Graysons’ history

Robert Grayson, a native of Sheffield, qualified as a solicitor at the outbreak of WWI. Returning from France in 1919 he took a place with the firm at which he had done his training and subsequently set up in business on his own account in Figtree Lane on 1st December 1925.

Robert was a sociable and cheerful man and he soon attracted a good client following. He remained a sole practitioner until after the WWII when his two sons qualified as solicitors and joined the practice.

By the late 60’s, when specialisation was the order of the day, the firm set out to expand. The business then operated out of premises at 7 North Church Street and Mazda Buildings, Campo Lane in Sheffield. It began to enjoy a period of organic growth; some partners having joined the firm as trainees, others being selected for their particular expertise, which has enabled each department in the firm to be led by a partner who is a specialist in their field of law.

In 1989 the firm amalgamated with Powell & Hatfield and extended into premises in Paradise Square, Campo Lane and North Church Street. In 1995 the firm took over premises at 10 Paradise Square and in March 1997 it further expanded into 12 Paradise Square which was previously used as counsels’ chambers. Graysons moved to Courtwood House in August 2017.

In March 1999 the firm set up an office in the NUM offices at 100 Saltergate, Chesterfield – primarily to serve work taken on behalf of the NUM (Derbyshire area). The Chesterfield practice has since grown and Graysons now provides its full range of services to clients in Chesterfield. In August 2022, the firm relocated its office to purpose built premises at The Glass Yard development, Sheffield Road, Chesterfield.

At the end of March 2011, Graysons Solicitors merged with Watson Esam Solicitors, long standing neighbours in Paradise Square, Sheffield and practiced under the name of Graysons WE until February 2015. We now practice as Graysons Solicitors once again.

In July 2021 Graysons took over the Hathersage office of Favell, Smith and Lawson and we now offer our full range of services in the Hope Valley.  The practice dates back 50 years to when Tony Favell and well-regarded conveyancer, Harry Walker set up the original firm.  By 1985, the partnership, then known as Favell, Smith and Henson, comprised Tony Favell, David Lawson, Phillip Henson and the late Keith Smith. Tony Favell became an MP in 1983. He is now retired and remains a well-known and respected figure in the region.
