NHS failing is to meet its targets

The BBC has reported that it has seen leaked figures that say that the NHS failed to meet it’s accident and emergency (A &E) targets in January 2017, showing its worst performance in the past 13 years.

The BBC report says that in January 2017so me patients had to wait more than 4 hours to be seen in A & E and also that some people who then needed to be admitted had to wait for more than 12 hours to get a bed.

The leaked figures appear to show that the government’s target of seeing (transferring, admitting or discharging) 95% of patients in A & E within 4 hours was missed , with only 82% of patients seen within the target limit in January 2017.  NHS official figures also show that only 86.2% of A & E patients were seen within 4 hours in December 2016.

A further Sky News report, suggests that there are a record number of people waiting more than 2 months to start cancer treatment after an urgent referral.  In 2016 the figure was 25,157, compared to 23,760 in 2015 and 13,191 in 2010.

Graysons’s medical negligence team says:

“The huge pressures now facing the NHS on a daily basis can be seen in the rising trend of diverting patients, long waiting times in A & E, and up to 12 hour trolley waits for a hospital bed. Today’s news highlights that the NHS is failing and can no longer offer a safe system of care as people no longer have access to the urgent care that they need and sadly this may lead to unnecessary complications and fatalities.”
