Graysons WE ready for Le Grand Départ

Graysons WE’s partners and staff will be out in force with the other 250,000 spectators when the world’s greatest cycle race, Le Tour de France, comes to Sheffield in July.

We are eagerly anticipating another British win of course, after Chris Froome last year and Bradley Wiggins in 2012, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the gruelling route from the Peak District into Sheffield is the leg that sorts out the men from the boys.

Stage 2 of ‘Le Grand Depart’ takes place on Sunday 6th July and is a 200km run from York to Sheffield, which involves some of the steepest hills in the whole race – including Jenkin Road, which has a maximum gradient of 30 percent.

Of course we are all looking forward to an accident free leg of the race here in Yorkshire in summer, and are pleased to hear that Sheffield City Council has been working hard to get the roads into shape – clearing up 13,000 complaints of potholes in the last 18 months.

If there are any unfortunate accidents, however, we have just the team to help, with our own ‘peloton’ of top notch personal injury lawyers with previous experience of helping cyclists who have had accidents on the roads of South Yorkshire and beyond.

In one case, our partner and personal injury specialist, Belinda Lancaster, helped a cyclist from Rotherham win over £23,000 compensation when a car turned right in front of him and he collided with it, suffering fractures to his leg and shoulder.  He was out of action for quite some time, but the money helped him get back on track with his life.

Partner and personal injury solicitor, Jonathan West is also currently representing three clients who have suffered accidents and injuries on the region’s roads and are looking for compensation from the various local authorities.  In one case a man came off his bike when he hit a defect on London Road, Sheffield.  He had to have 8 stiches in his forehead and suffered injuries to his shoulder, knee and hands.  In another case, a rut in the road in Rotherham caused a rider to fall off his bike, leaving him in hospital for 12 days after breaking his thigh bone, and finally, in Worksop, a man was thrown from his bike when he hit a pothole in the road and suffered a broken arm.  Jonathan is confident of positive results for all three clients.

Naturally we don’t expect to see these sorts accidents on the Tour de France route as traffic is restricted, but it is certainly and fast and furious sport.  The cyclists seem to be a different breed to the rest of us – they get knocked down, and they get back up again.  We wish them all the very best of luck en route through our city – but don’t forget Chris – we are here if you need us!
