The memorial is dedicated to the fallen miners of Shirebrook Colliery and was funded by ex-miners, the local community, and various organisations, including a donation from Graysons.
Shirebrook Colliery, which finished production twenty-five years ago on May 7th, 1993, was the penultimate colliery to close in the North Derbyshire coalfield.
The shafts were originally sunk in 1895/1896, providing work for the local community for over 100 years. Being a miner was a highly dangerous occupation, and tragically, over 74 lives were lost in the pit’s lifetime.
The Shirebrook Colliery memorial is a statue that represents the mining community and heritage of Shirebrook.
Peter Clark, the managing partner, stated:
“It felt only fitting for us to contribute to such an important historical piece that commemorates the 74 miners who tragically lost their lives at Shirebrook Colliery throughout the years.”
