At the time of the accident at work, Mr L was working as a trainee forgeman. He had worked for the employer for about a year. He was part of a team of six and was using a press to make steel rings. Just before the end of his shift, one of his team ran over his foot with a manipulator, which is a very large and slow machine.
The manipulator operated a beacon warning system, but Mr L did not see it as the machine approached him from behind and no audible warning was given.
Mr L was in severe pain and an ambulance was called. He was taken to A & E at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield and X-rays showed several broken bones. He had also sustained severe bruising and skin disruption to his foot.
He remained in hospital for three days following his accident at work and initially feared losing his foot, but thankfully it was saved. However, he later had to undergo surgery to remove his little toe.
He was left with significant ongoing pain, a permanent limp and muscle wasting and he has to wear an orthotic for life.
Mr L was unable to return to his pre-accident employment.
Employer admitted liability
