Self-employed builder, Ian Hall, from Chesterfield was nearing the end of the work he was doing to convert the Uniform Pub in Chesterfield, when he ended up in Chesterfield Hospital with a broken foot.
At around 8am on a July morning, whilst working at the pub, Ian ran out of materials to mix the last of the concrete he needed. He only needed a small amount and noticed lorry loads of the stuff that he needed in some gas works around the corner, so he decided to go and see if the owners would sell him a couple of barrow loads.
Ian walked along Factory Street in Chesterfield to get to the gas works and had to move to one side to allow a couple to pass. As he did so, he stepped onto the kerbstones at the edge of the pavement and, not realising that one of them was much lower than the others, he stumbled. Whilst he did not fall to the floor, he felt the pain in his foot immediately.
Initially thinking that he had twisted something, Ian turned back to return to the pub, unable to continue to the gas works. By the time he got there his foot had become red and swollen and he recognised the pain as being the same as when he had previously broken his foot whilst playing football. A visit to Chesterfield Royal Hospital and an xray confirmed that Ian’s foot was broken and he was given a fibreglass boot to wear, crutches and pain killers.
Ian had to continue working, and did so whilst wearing the boot for five weeks. It was awkward, and quite painful at first, so he was unable to do much manual work, but he managed by giving more of the manual work to the men he employed, directing them as he went along.
Ian contacted personal injury specialist Jonathan West at Chesterfield solicitors, Graysons with Watson Esam, who took up his case and was able to secure compensation of £4,000 for Ian from Chesterfield Council, which included an element of loss of earnings.
