Making a will is the only way you can be sure that your estate will go where you want it to go when you die. It is not difficult, or scary, as some people think, but if you die without having made a will, your estate will be distributed according to the strict rules of intestacy.  This means that people who you do not want to inherit your estate – inlcuding the Crown – might actually do so.
