GRAYSONS DONATE COMPUTERS TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Sheffield  solicitors Graysons, in partnership with Computer Aid International, have sent their first shipment of computers to help schools and community organisations in the developing world.

The scheme was set up to help bridge the digital divide that currently exists between countries in the developed and developing worlds. Paul White, Head of IT at Graysons explains, “As a business we constantly invest in having the latest IT systems in place and the computers we replace are still modern and very usable. This scheme is an ideal way for us to be able to donate this technology to people who would otherwise be unable to afford it.”  The first shipment of over 40 Pentium 4 computers, as well as 30 monitors and various accessories is destined for schools in sub-Saharan Africa.

Paul says that Graysons are also keen to ensure that as many IT products as possible are recycled “The fact that the scheme is also environmentally friendly was a major factor in us deciding to take part; we’re keen to lower the firms carbon footprint.” The scheme guarantees that 0% of donated systems will end up in land-fill.

Many companies are reluctant to donate computers because of the perceived threat of data being recovered from them. Computer Aid use the worlds most advanced data destruction software to clean hard drives, the software is even approved by the Ministry of Defence. The computers are completely wiped clean and data is guaranteed 100% unrecoverable, “this was an initial concern when we looked into these schemes, and the reason we partnered with Computer Aid was that their technology means that this is not an issue.”

Graysons are committed to donating more computers in the future says Paul “It’s a very worthy scheme as it benefits the developing world as well as the environment and we’re happy to be involved.”
