According to Resolution the average age at which people divorce is 44, and there are 118,140 divorces every year. 48% of these divorcing couples have at least one child under the age of 16. It also suggests that 2.9 million couples cohabit in the UK and that cohabitees are the fasting growing family type in the UK.
Resolution has long campaigned for improvements to the family justice system, which has a huge impact on these people. In accepting that divorce and separation are part of everyday life now, it believes that current law is out of touch. Its manifesto sets out exactly what it believes the government needs to do to change the family justice system in order to improve the lives of separating and separated families in England and Wales.
Six key areas of change are identified within the manifesto. These are:
- Protect vulnerable people going through separation
- Introduce measures to keep divorce out of the court
- Introduce a parenting charter to help parents understand their responsibilities when they separate
- Allow people to divorce without blame
- Give people more financial clarity on divorce
- Protect couples who live together
