Changing your name

Anyone over the age of 18 can choose to change their name at any time, and for any reason, as long as their intent is not to defraud or deceive another person.

Change Your Name

Some common reasons that people choose to change their name:

  • They are unhappy with their current name
  • Divorce or separation
  • Marriage
  • Adoption
  • To have the same surname as their child

There are a number of ways of changing your name such as a deed poll, a statutory declaration or a change of name deed. Graysons solicitors can help you to complete a ‘change of name deed’ which is a formal written and witnessed document that can be used as proof of having changed your name.

It is useful to have written proof of change of name for informing organisations such as banks and government bodies. You will also need to provide confirmation of your new name when applying for documents such as a passport or a driving license.

The process of changing your name is quite straight forward and we can generally complete this in around 1 week.

Contact us if you would like to arrange a change of name.
