History of Graysons

Robert Grayson, a native of Sheffield, qualified as a solicitor at the outbreak of the First World War. Returning from France in 1919 he took employment with the firm where he had been articled and subsequently set up in business on his own account in Figtree Lane on 1st December 1925. A sociable and cheerful man he soon attracted a client following but he remained a sole practitioner until after the Second World War when his two sons qualified and joined the practice.

By the late 60's when specialisation was the order of the day, the firm set out to expand. The business then operated out of premises at 7 North Church Street and Mazda Buildings, Campo Lane. The firm began to enjoy a period of organic growth, some partners having joined the firm as trainees, others being selected for their particular expertise so that now a specialist partner heads up each department.

In 1989 the firm amalgamated with Powell & Hatfield and extended into the premises in Paradise Square, Campo Lane and North Church Street. In 1995 the firm took over premises at 10 Paradise Square and in March 1997 the firm further expanded into 12 Paradise Square which was previously used as counsels' chambers and now operates out of 4-12 Paradise Square. In March 1999, the firm set up an Office in the NUM Offices at 100 Saltergate, Chesterfield to primarily serve work taken on behalf of the NUM (Derbyshire Area). In May 2001 the premises at Paradise Square were extended to 9 North Church Street where the Mining Division is based.

The practice, now comprising nine partners has a full supporting staff of solicitors, legal executives, para-legals and secretaries currently numbering around 120 who provide collective expertise covering the whole range of legal services.
